España has been the island's Spanish restaurant for long enough that it functions as a local institution rather than a novelty. It sits in a house on South 4th Street, a block and a half off Centre, and it runs the format you would expect: tapas to share, paella to order for the table, and a wine list with genuine Spanish and Portuguese depth.
It is a dinner restaurant in a residential-feeling building — small rooms, close tables, and a patio. That makes it one of the more atmospheric dinners downtown, and one of the ones worth booking.

What to expect
Order the way the menu is built: several tapas across the table, then a paella if you have the time — paella is cooked to order and takes a while, which is a feature rather than a fault on an unhurried evening.
The dining rooms are small. On a Friday or Saturday in season, or during a festival weekend, book ahead; walking in at 7pm on a Saturday is optimistic.
Where it sits, and where to park
22 S 4th Street is a block and a half south-east of the Centre Street shops — close enough to walk from anywhere downtown, far enough that the street is quieter. Downtown's on-street parking is changing — the city's paid programme is due to end on 18 November 2026 — so check the parking guide.
It pairs well with a drink first at The Decantery or the Palace Saloon, both a three-minute walk away.
