Burlingame Restaurant

The island's serious dinner room, on South 5th Street

Checked by The Things To Do In Fernandina Beach editorial desk. Hours and menus change; confirm with the restaurant before you travel.

Burlingame is the restaurant people on the island name when the question is where to go for a proper dinner. It sits on South 5th Street, a few blocks off the Centre Street tourist run, in a house-scale building — which is part of why it reads as a destination rather than a walk-in.

The kitchen works in the modern American register: a changing menu, careful plating, a real wine list. It is the most expensive category on this island and the one with the fewest options, which is exactly why it books out.

What to expect

Book. This is not a room to arrive at hopefully on a Saturday. Reservations are the norm and weekend tables in season go early.

Expect a menu that moves with what is available rather than a fixed card, an evening that runs two hours rather than one, and a bill in the island's top bracket. If that is not the evening you want, downtown has plenty of middle ground.

Where it sits, and where to park

20 S 5th Street is four blocks east of the marina end of Centre — walkable from anywhere downtown, and quieter than the main street. Downtown parking rules apply; see the parking guide.

For the other end of the island's fine dining — French-influenced, in the resort corridor — see Lagniappe on First Coast Highway.

Quick tips

  • Reserve. Weekend tables in season go well ahead.
  • The menu changes — don't plan around a specific dish.
  • Quieter street than Centre; the walk is four blocks.
